Getting started

Downloading and installing

First, choose the package for your operating system:

• Windows

  Download and run this installer; choose an installation directory and then, after installation, choose ‘Mivvi’ from the start menu.

• Mac OS X

  Download this zip file, then open it by double-clicking. Copy the enclosed folder onto your hard disk then, in the copy you just made, double-click on the ‘mivvi.jar’ file.

• Linux

  It’s Linux. You know what you’re doing, right?

(For other platforms with Java support, take the Linux distribution and delete the lib/libjdic.so: you won’t be able to browse or launch media.)

First run

Mivvi will ask you for permission to check its website for current program data. (If you say ‘no’, Mivvi will use the data you got when you downloaded it, which may well be out of date.) Don’t worry – you can always change your decision later using the Settings menu.

Progress bars will tell you what’s happening. If you let Mivvi check, it will be downloading new data. Then, it needs to load that data in.

The first thing Mivvi wants to do is show upcoming TV broadcasts, by connecting to RadioTimes.com, but you can choose Cancel and leave that for later.

When Mivvi has loaded, the central window shows buttons to get to the other windows.

• Show upcoming TV broadcasts – find what’s on TV, and when. (UK only, for now.)
• Manage files – Mivvi will help you to organise and browse media on your computer.
• Search for downloads – Mivvi makes it easy to check websites for downloads related to TV programmes.
• Find DVDs, and other information – Mivvi wants to help you to find what’s available.
• Manage your interests – show the programmes you’re interested in, and only the programmes you’re interested in.
• Hack the data – Mivvi is open data. Extend it, use it and build on it.
